Human nature is supposed to reflect the nature of our God

Pastor Jeff Struecker

We will take a concept that we’ve been working on for several months now, and we’re going to take that concept and move it one big step to the right. We’ve been talking about the doctrine of humanity. Who we are, and we’ve spent several weeks as a church describing what it means to be created in the image of God. When God made all of the stuff in the universe in those first six days, he made one thing very special. He made humans special because He used the language, “Let’s create humans in our image.”

Well, we’re going to take that idea, and we want to move it a big step forward today. And we’re going to talk about the doctrine of humanity. And specifically, we’re going to talk about human nature. And when we start talking about human nature, we’re going to talk about what does it really means to be human?

Not just being created in the image of God. What is different about us from the rest of the creatures out there? The Bible uses a lot of very specific language when it refers to God creating Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden (Genesis chapter one).

Today we’re going to take a look at Genesis chapter two, and we’re going to see how God made this creature, using a different technique for every other creature in the universe. He spoke the word, and the creature came into existence.

The scripture verses that I want you to see and memorize today come from Genesis chapter two. In Genesis 2:7, the Bible describes God’s actions when he created the first humans, and I think this verse will help you figure out what it looks like to be human and how different human nature is.

Memory Verse

In some translations of the Bible, in old times, instead of using the word “being,” they substituted it with “soul.” They said when God formed man out of the dust of the ground. God used hands and fashioned the dust, and the dust didn’t come to life until God breathed his breath into the nostrils of that creature on the ground. Keep in mind for every other thing that you see, mountains and birds and animals and fish and all that you see around you, God just said the word, and it came into existence. But with man, God fashioned with his hands breathed into his nostrils.

And then old translations of the Bible say that man became a living soul when God breathed into his nostrils. That’s the word. Those are some translations used.

In fact, for the next couple of weeks, we will talk about your soul because only the Bible gives a healthy understanding of what a soul is. So I want to ask a question about the soul.

Some famous Bible teachers have said that human beings have two parts to us. According to the Bible, we have the part that you can see and touch; that’s the flesh, and then you have something inside you. There’s no way you can take an X-ray of it. They will sometimes call it your “spirit” or “soul.”

Some Bible teachers believe that there are two parts to the human being, the flesh, and the soul. Some believe that there is three parts flesh. Spirit and soul and those that say three parts typically say that spirit is your emotions, and it’s your mind, not your brain, because you can touch that. But it’s what makes you love or what makes you laugh. It’s what makes you, you, and you have this eternal soul.

I don’t want to get into a big argument about whether there are two or three parts to the human being. But I want to describe when the Bible uses soul language and spirit language.

Genesis chapter 2:7, a “living being,” that word is different than everything else in creation. And I’m going to use a Gatorade bottle. Look, I’m not getting paid to endorse Gatorade right now. But this bottle indicates that there’s something on the outside, a plastic lid and plastic bottle holding the contents of what’s inside it. It’s plastic and see-through, so you and I can see what’s inside the bottle.

But if you were to talk about human beings and use this as an analogy. The body, organs, and bones that you can take an X-ray with would be the stuff that’s on the outside. But then the Bible is using language to say. There’s something on the inside that you can’t put your finger on, you can’t touch, you can’t taste, you can’t smell, but it doesn’t make it any less real. That thing that’s on the inside is what makes humans human.

Now I want to take this concept a little further because all humans don’t matter how old, skin color doesn’t matter what country they came from. All of us have a soul. You can’t touch it, you can’t feel it, or you can’t see it. But it’s still very real.

That idea is the universal nature of the human soul. All of us have a soul. It’s what makes humans human.

I want you to think about it this way. In those science books, you probably solved that picture of an embryo, a baby, a human baby embryo, a pig embryo, and maybe a fish embryo in school. And it showed you that at the very earliest stages they all look very similar. But when they are in the womb long enough, they start to turn out very different.

Well, what’s most different about humans from all of the other creatures in the universe is that you and I have a soul and the rest of the creatures in the universe don’t. But, not just universally, all humans have a soul. You, in particular, have a soul that’s different than everybody else.

It’s what makes you you, and your soul is the essence of who you are, and what you’re going to see in the next few weeks in mid-week worship is that your soul is eternal. Your soul has infinite value because God created you, body and soul. God loves you, body and soul.

This makes you you, and you’re different from any other human being. Humans are different from every other part of God’s creation because God created us uniquely and gave us human souls.

A Challenge

I want to put a question for you, and it’s something that I want you to think through, and then I want you to answer alone or with your family. Here’s the question that I want you to answer this week.

Humans are different from every other creature because God placed a soul inside us. What do we do that makes us appear more like animals? Those would be acts that make us less human. What do we do as human beings that make us less like animals? Those would be the actions that make us more human.
